System overview
The FOM moduloR2R is a highly capable, modular roll-to-roll pilot line platform. The base model consists of unwind, rewind, oven, and slot die stations for simple pilot-scale thin film production. This can be easily customized and optimized for a given coating process by adding various machine modules and process stations.
The FOM moduloR2R makes designing the perfect production line for a particular process simple, representing an ideal first step from R&D to full-scale production.

Designed for pilot-scale research

Designed for experimental research
The FOM moduloR2R addresses the challenges associated with roll-to-roll equipment in R&D environments. Industrial roll-to-roll equipment often lacks the necessary freedom to experiment, adapt and data collect as is common in research. At the same time, the FOM moduloR2R is capable of industrial production speed. Based on a new PLC platform the machine is Industry 4.0 ready, allowing facile reconfiguration for industrial production once your research is ready for technology transfer to a pilot or commercial phase.

Modular by design
The modular-built FOM moduloR2R is fitted with all-around web access for easy maintenance and constant monitoring of the printed web. Furthermore, the FOM moduloR2R enables custom configuration and positioning of the coating, printing, and drying units ideal for R&D. Upon request, the FOM moduloR2R is Atex-compatible with certification.

Coating & printing methods
The FOM moduloR2R facilitates the integration of multiple coating and printing methods into the machine frame, for example, slot-die coating and flexographic, inkjet, or rotary screen printing. In principle, any deposition method can be integrated. Designed to handle a wide range of substrates it is currently running with carbon fiber tows, multiple plastics, paper, metal foils, and flexible glass.

Digital control & data management
The coater is based on a digitally controlled platform and provides process control and complete process data logging with export functions to enable researchers to analyze this data. The complete coating conditions are automatically logged by the control software and can also be printed alongside the coated area by a synchronized barcode printer/reader. Comprehensive software controls all coating parameters, such as coating speed, slot-die head height adjustment, and heating, and the integrated monitoring system with ethernet access provides easy service support and offers remote service.

Frequently asked questions
What coating width and speed does the FOM moduloR2R support?
FOM moduloR2R is available in two models. The moduloR2R 300 coats up to 300 mm on substrates up to 350 mm wide; the moduloR2R 500 coats from 1 mm to 500 mm on substrates up to 550 mm wide. Both run at up to 20 m/min, accept substrate roll diameters up to 700 mm, and use fully motorized x-y-z positioning with 1 µm precision.
Which slot-die heads fit the FOM moduloR2R?
The moduloR2R 300 is compatible with slot-die heads from FOM SD 25 up to FOM SD 300. The moduloR2R 500 extends that range to FOM SD 500. Shims and guides are available for adjusting coating width and pattern.
What drying options are available on the FOM moduloR2R?
Two oven types are available. The FOM flotation oven handles web widths up to 550 mm over a 1000 mm drying length, with airflow up to 900 m³/h and integrated IR drying as an option. The Optima oven cures areas 350 mm or 550 mm wide across up to 9 meters of web, using hot air ring heaters with convection heat transfer, operated under pressure with controlled extraction. Both reach up to 200 °C. IR curing lamps are available for the Optima oven on the 300 version only. An air knife system and an IR system are available as additional drying options.
What does the FOM moduloR2R need to be installed?
Modules are 800–1600 mm long. The moduloR2R 300 measures 1290 mm wide and 1800 mm high per module; the moduloR2R 500 measures approximately 1500 mm wide and 2000 mm high. Each module weighs between 300 and 800 kg. Both models require a 3-phase 400 V + N + PE supply at 50/60 Hz with a maximum current of 63 A, compressed air at 5–7 bar (clean, dry, non-lubricated, ISO 8573-1:2010 Class 1.2.3 or better) via a Ø8 mm push-fit connection, and an Ethernet connection over RJ45.
What coating and printing methods can be integrated into the FOM moduloR2R?
Slot-die coating can be combined with flexographic, inkjet, or rotary screen printing within the same machine frame, and in principle any deposition method can be integrated. Available modules include blade coating, a flexographic module, calendering and lamination, corona treatment, a non-contact surface cleaner, an ionizing bar, slot-die height and alignment laser systems, and barcode and text inkjet printing.
What substrates does the FOM moduloR2R handle?
The platform is designed for flexible substrates and is currently running with carbon fiber tows, multiple plastics, paper, metal foils, and flexible glass.
Does the FOM moduloR2R meet European machine safety standards?
FOM moduloR2R is built to EN 60204-1 and ISO 13849-1 (CE) and complies with Directive 2006/42/EC Annex II B. Atex-compatible configuration with certification is available on request.
