High throughput desktop roll-to-roll coater
Robust slot-die sheet coating system
The system is designed for the fast-and-easy coating of functional materials in laboratories aiming for multi-user high throughput research on topics such as organic and perovskite electronics, sensors and energy storage. We are continuously working on improving the simplified design of the FOM scalarSC tool, we recommend it not only for its entry-level investment but also for allowing higher operator freedom and quick workflow.
An alternative to spin coating
Whether you are doing fundamental research or developing a new process for your product, the FOM scalarSC is a direct route from spin coating toward medium-scale, industry-relevant processing where rigid and/or flexible substrates are required. It offers a compact setup that can be easily installed inside a laminar flow hood or a glovebox. Additionally, the external syringe pump will allow a better design of your workspace.
Simple handling and alignment
Both flexible and rigid substrates of up to 300×200 mm in size can be freely positioned on the high-flatness aluminium-made sample holder. The infinite-step height and lateral position manual dial will allow for systematic, quick-reaction experimental runs and systematic studies where the operator has full control at all times.
Installs without preparing the lab
FOM scalarSC runs from a single-phase wall socket at 230 V or 110 V, drawing a maximum of 16 A through a standard IEC connector. It needs no compressed air supply and no separate electrical panel, and at 50 kg it can be moved between benches. Installation is plug and play.

Frequently asked questions
What coating width and speed does the FOM scalarSC support?
FOM scalarSC coats widths from 1 mm to 200 mm at speeds from 0.05 to 2.0 m/min, with coating lengths up to 300 mm. The substrate holder measures 255 × 355 mm and accepts both rigid and flexible substrates.
Which slot-die heads fit the FOM scalarSC?
FOM scalarSC is compatible with slot-die heads from FOM SD 25 up to FOM SD 200. Shims and guides are available for adjusting coating width and pattern, and slot-die head heating runs up to 80 °C.
How does the FOM scalarSC dry coatings?
A built-in hotplate handles drying on the machine, with substrate holder heating up to 200 °C. An air knife system and an IR drying system are available as additional drying options.
What does the FOM scalarSC need to be installed?
The machine measures 870 × 450 × 480 mm (L × W × H) and weighs 50 kg. It runs from a single-phase supply at 230 V or 110 V, 50 or 60 Hz, drawing a maximum of 16 A through an IEC connector, with a maximum fuse size of 13 A. No compressed air supply is required and installation is plug and play. A local PC connection uses an Ethernet cable with an RJ45 connector; remote access is available via an IXON switch, which FOM does not supply.
How is the FOM scalarSC operated?
Coating is semi-automated through an intuitive HMI touch panel. Slot-die head height and lateral position are set on an infinite-step manual dial, which gives the operator direct control over positioning during a run. Fluid is delivered by an external reversible syringe pump from 1 ml to 300 ml.
What options are available for the FOM scalarSC?
Equipment options include an ionizing system, a flexographic system, a blade coating system, and a microporous vacuum chuck. Air knife and IR drying systems are available for additional drying, along with an enclosure or glovebox, standard and high-viscosity external syringe pumps, stainless steel, glass and PP syringes, and slot-die shims and guides.
Does the FOM scalarSC meet European machine safety standards?
FOM scalarSC is built to EN 60204-1 and ISO 13849-1 (CE) and complies with Directive 2006/42/EC Annex II B.
